The Bronze Medallion course challenges the candidate both mentally and physically. Judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness – the four components of water rescue – form the basis of Bronze Medallion training. Candidates acquire the assessment and problem-solving skills needed to make good decisions in, on, and around the water. Rescuers learn various entries, approaches, tows/carries, and victim removals in safe methods in preparation for challenging rescues of increased risk involving conscious and unconscious victims of various types. Lifesavers must demonstrate recognizable stroke proficiency to a Love to Swim 10 level (or equivalent) and be able to complete various physical skills including a 400-meter endurance timed swim in under 12 minutes. This course is a prerequisite to the Bronze Cross award.
